THE MARRIAGE OF NAAGI
A parental agreement of marriage.
At 6 they were matched, sweet children.
At 9 promises exchanged below Jaipur sun,
And at 12 all knew Naagi was his intended.
At 15 she danced around fire, and bound
Herself to him ‘til death they could part,
But when she plunged her small body
In front of that bright yellow bus,
They said that was never their intention.

OMG! I didn’t see that coming. What a wrenching piece an excellent writing.
Thanks, Diane. I’ll do the rounds tomorrow morning – looking forward to reading yours!
Powerful….Diane
Whoa. That was unexpected. I love the whole thing, though.
Thank you!
Never seems its the man who jumps though – men generally have the better part of that deal -
I would never want to live in that world. One without choices. Great, yet sad, ending.
It is nice to have choices about ones life.
captivating little moment.
So sad. Powerful story though.
Am from India & so know very well that such sad things are still a reality:-(What an excellent piece of writing though-well done Misky:-)
Sad because it’s true. India is much in the news these days. But how slow change occurs. I’ve been to Jaipur. I loved it as a tourist inhaling a new culture.. but to be born without choice… that’s tough to say the least. So thought provoking and powerful.
how sad she must have been to turn to death. Very well written.
Oh my. Wow. What a piece. Wow. Wow. I don’t know what to say. This is so powerful. It cuts you to the core. Wow. Wow. *shakes head*. Wow.
when she plunged her small body … what an image!
Terrific and very apropos given the recent events in India and the “solution” to a rape conviction.
Their hypocrisy is very well shown here! Well done!
I didn’t expect that turn at the end. It’s sad that she had to go to such drastic measures to make a choice for her life.
And everything seemed to be going so well. Love how you did that!
