Grubs, Bugs and a Woodpecker

GRUBS, BUGS AND A WOODPECKER

My bright yellow and bottle-green
plumed woodpecker’s returned.
A rare treat; a twitcher’s incident.

His head sheens with chilled rain,
nodding and bobbing, an affable
lemon-lime ball. He’s an errant stroke,
a poke of citrus colour that brightens
a tennis court. I doubt that he

appreciates his patchwork threads;
a streak of scarlet red adorns his head,
and coral feet pry grubs and bugs
from the open field. He’s certainly

too busy to bother with weather –
soaked and bathed in rain,
he drips dry with a shake of a worm.
It’s grubby work but he’s
come to terms with that.

  1. He doesn’t have to worry about his patchwork appearance, his future mate will decide whether he is up to scratch. What we see in nature is beautiful but for them it is just endless hard work. I loved this piece.

  2. I mostly hear my woodpeckers, you’ve let me see them clearly with this verse! I can also see the results of his designs on my willow!

Thank you for your visit…If I turn the idea into a story I make it short enough for Flashy Fiction. I don’t know if I can do another story verse with over 40 pages ;) …but you have planted a seed.

  3. Misky, I LOVED reading of your bird…so lively. And the “grubby” line — so fun!! I’m a week behind but finally posted my #95. Glad to have not missed yours!
